  • Costume Contest Rules & Guidelines

Around 8:30 PM we will have our costume contest. Those who wish to participate will grab a number and get in line!  Each contestant will have the spot light for a few seconds and people will vote on ballots for their favorites in these categories:
    Cutest Costume
    Funniest Costume
    Scariest Costume
    Most Unique Costume
    Favorite Solo Costume

    • The contest is optional!
    • All costumes must be PG. If you have questions, please contact jbennetti.thsg@gmail.com
    • Large costumes are welcome, however the venue is not huge and it may be difficult to dance in a costume that is too large.  There are bathrooms where guests can put on their costumes closer to the contest.
    • Rules for Costume Props:
      1. All props must be stored in the designated area before and after the contest.  No props will be allowed on the dance floor before or after the contest for safety reasons, no exceptions.
      2. You are responsible for making sure your props go home with you at the end of the evening.
      3. Should any props become a safety concern at any point during the event, they will be removed and stored in the designated area until after the dance, no exceptions.
    This is a "Drop-Off" Event
    • All attendees must check in on arrival. A chaperone will be outside checking people in.
    • Parents are welcome to gather outside. We know some people are traveling to the event, parents are welcome to gather outside the venue to visit, we just ask you do not block the parking area or the entrance to the dance.  There are some restaurants in walking distance, as well as Video Game World if you have younger siblings with you.  The venue is just not large enough to accommodate all the guests, their parents and siblings.
    • Attendance is conditional upon respectful behavior at the discretion of the hosts. Parents will be notified of any disruptive behavior.
    • There are volunteer parents that will be running and chaperoning the dance.  We appreciate parents offering to chaperone, but we can not accept all of the offers. We simply do not have enough space to accommodate everyone.
    Food

We have decided based on majority interest we are going to do the homeschool "deal" days. We are offering a $3 deal (including shoes) per game/player for our homeschoolers and $4 kids meals. (The deal will only be allowed for kids who come in accompanied by their parent or chaperone or have some way to identify they're homeschooled, this is to prevent non-homeschoolers from taking advantage of the deal.)

One of our managers will be available for basic coaching, bowling advice and behind the scenes tours of the bowling machines at 2PM each of these deal days.

If interested in a league we would need minimum of 4 teams with 3 players each. (12 kids) League would be down a trophy win. We could do K-12 grades as the leagues have a handicap average, for those who don't know what that means, it gives everyone a fair shot at winning. We could run it for either 10 or 12 weeks. Please let us know ASAP (as of 9/15/17) if you want to have a league on which day. It would be 2 games $8, shoes included, with a trophy for the winning team.

Home School Student Opportunity with Central Piedmont Community College - Spring 2018 Dual Enrollment

    A FORWARD FROM NCHE
    ______________________________________________________________________

    From: Kimber Morton [mailto:Kimber.Morton@cpcc.edu]

    Good Morning-

Here at CPCC we offer a dual enrollment opportunity for 11th and 12th grade high school students who live and attend school in the state of NC, to take college level courses tuition fee!  We already have a strong homeschool  and private school presence, but we are sure there are more who would be interested in taking advantage of the opportunity for their student(s) to take courses that would satisfy not only their high school graduation requirements, but also give them the jump start on their college education. Many have even moved towards the completion of a certificate, diploma and /or an Associate’s degree.

We offer many online and face-to-face courses to suit the students’ needs of transferrable General Education courses at any of our state supported universities and colleges and/or skill specific courses that build into CPCC’s Associate in Applied Science degrees. For the academic year 2016-2017 we had over 900+ home school / private school students participate in our program.

I am accepting enrollment for the Spring 2018 semester and I wanted to make sure our home school/ private school students were aware of not only the opportunity, but also the enrollment dates. Please share with your North Carolina administrators. I have included specific links that apply to your students.

CMS eLearning Academy 2017-2018 Discussion from THSG Homeschool Leaders Forum

There has been a discussion in The Homeschool Gossip's Homeschool Leaders Forum
regarding a link from the CMS eLearning Academy shared by member Alicia M.  (Thank you Alicia for sharing!!)

    Here is the text:
    "CMS School Web Sites
    eLearning Academy
    Welcome Homeschoolers!

We are pleased to offer our high school eLearning courses to home-schooled students.

Home-schooling is a significant investment of your family's time and money.  CMS wants to make this easier for you by providing high quality online courses for you and access to highly qualified teachers.

In addition, eligible students have the option to participate in sports and clubs at their CMS home school.

    How it works:

    • Students must be in grades 9-12 living in Mecklenburg County.
    • Home school students must enroll in at least two online courses per semester (4 per year) and make satisfactory progress throughout the semester.
    • Students must enroll in CMS, while also maintaining their homeschool enrollment.
    • Courses can supplement home school curriculum.
    • Students will have access to highly qualified certified teachers online, by phone, and in person by appointment.
    • Students who take at least 3 courses are eligible to participate in sports teams at their CMS home high school.
    • Students can choose whether to graduate from the eLearning Academy or from their home school.
The members have been discussing this option and opinions vary.

Member Tiffany L. contacted the Director of the NC DNPE with a specific question, and Diane E. Allen responded. (Thank you Tiffany L. for sharing!!!)

Here is Diane E Allen's, Director of the DPNE, response:

An Invitation to the NC Envirothon for Middle and High School Students!

    Monroe, NC 28112

A message sent to The Homeschool Gossip:

Hi there! My name is Chelsea Greenhaw and I am the Conservation Education Specialist with the Union County Soil and Water Conservation District. I wanted to share information about an interest meeting I am hosting for NC Envirothon for middle and high school students. I am attached a flyer and letter for your review. Please pass this information on to your members if you feel comfortable doing so! Thanks so much and happy fall!
    __________________________________________________________________
Union County Soil and Water Conservation District’s mission is to provide technical, financial, and educational assistance to the citizens of Union County to aid in the proper management of our natural resources.

    August 29, 2017

Dear Union County Educators and Youth Leaders,

My name is Chelsea Greenhaw and I am the Conservation Education Specialist with Union County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). My job here at the District is to provide educational programming and information centered on natural resources conservation topics to the citizens of Union County, which includes (but is definitely not limited to) overseeing our county’s Envirothon Program. Envirothon is a hands-on, natural sciences academic competition for middle and high school students across the United States. Students, with the help of an advisor (you) and a coach (myself), study material on the topics of wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soils, and current environmental issues and compete as a team of three-to-five students.

Envirothon serves as a valuable extracurricular activity that challenges students in and out of the classroom while making learning fun and immersive. Students have the opportunity to study real-world material, practice teamwork and leadership, travel to new parts of the state, and win scholarships, all while mastering new and exciting natural resources topics. Envirothon is a fantastic fit for FFA, 4H, and homeschool students, and a well-suited addition to any environmental science or agriculture curriculum. Union County SWCD is currently recruiting middle and high school teams for the 2018 competition season, and want you to be a part of this fun educational opportunity!
Union County SWCD will be hosting an Envirothon Information and Interest Meeting on Monday, September 18th at 7:00pm in the Union County Agriculture and Conference Center. If you are a teacher, advisor, parent, or 4H, FFA, or youth group leader who is interested in getting your middle and/or high school students involved in Envirothon this year, we encourage you to attend. Interested students are also invited to join us. Please RSVP for this meeting if you will be attending. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Chelsea Greenhaw at chelsea.greenhaw@unioncountync.gov or 704.233.1621 ext. 101.

We hope that you will take advantage of all of the wonderful benefits that Envirothon has to offer your students. We wish everyone a fantastic school year and happy fall season!

    Sincerely,
    Chelsea Greenhaw, Conservation Education Specialist

Teen Park Date ~ Thurs Sept. 14 ~ Matthews!

    Teen Park Date ~ Matthews
    Hosted by Hillary Grupos

Weather Rescheduled Teen Park Date: Thursday 14 September at 3 PM in Matthews.

I'm so glad more than 30 families are interested in coming to the Tern Park Date! Weather.com is predicting Irma rains continuing into Tuesday, so we are rescheduling for Thursday (same time and place: 3 PM Squirrel Lake Park).

Stay safe this weekend and early next week! Can't wait to see and meet y'all!

It's open to Middle and High School Homeschoolers and their families, through South Charlotte & Beyond Secular Middle and High Schoolers FB group.

Squirrel Lake Park has a great playground, some walking trails, a beautiful lake, a pavilion, plenty of room to run, and bathrooms right there.

Borrowing from Julie Keith's excellent idea, we will be doing a literature swap. Bring a book, wrapped, with an age range and a few hints about the book. For every book you bring, you should go home with one.

Scottish Country Dance Classes for 2017-2018 begin Sept. 7, 2017 ~ first two classes are free!

website  ~  facebook page  ~  facebook group

The Scottish Country Dance group will be meeting at Gilwood Presbyterian Church (2993 Odell School Rd, Concord, NC) on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  The classes are for ages 8 and up. Occasionally, classes are divided by age for height reasons.  Class dues are $70 per new dancer for the year ($60 for returning dancers) with the first two classes free.  Checks can be made out to CSCDS.  Classes will run from September 7 through June 7, with no class during Holy Week (Thursday, March 29).  There is an advanced class that meets on the same day from 2-3:30 p.m.  This class is based on skill level and is by invitation.

The dress code is as follows:
Gentlemen – Pants or shorts, no jeans or camo.  Shirts with sleeves.  Socks with gel grip or soft soled shoes such as ghillies or ballet shoes (black is the most common color).
Ladies – Shirts with sleeves, skirts to mid-calf, socks with gel grip or soft soled shoes such as ghillies or ballet shoes (black is the most common color).

**It is strongly recommended to purchase dance shoes that are large enough to fit an insole, as we will be dancing on 100% concrete.  Last year we found reasonably found priced insoles at Payless ShoeSource.**

Classes may be canceled on short notice due to the church needing the space for a funeral.  We will do our best to contact you as soon as possible if this occurs.

If you would like more information on our Scottish Country Dance group, check out our website or Facebook page. For those considering classes, you may join our members in our Facebook group!

We are looking forward to seeing you on the first day of class; please bring a friend!

    Best Regards,
    Daniel (Scottish Dance coordinator)
