The Homeschool Room has added new classes to their 2016 Fall Enrichment Schedule at both locations!

The Homeschool Room’s Teacher Meet & Greet in Huntersville is this Monday Aug. 1,  11:00-2:00 PM!

3 NEW CLASSES that have been added to their Fall Enrichment Schedule!

·        Math-U-See Pre-Algebra with Cheri Friesz

·        Math-U-See Algebra 1 with Cheri Friesz

·        3D Animation 1 - Julie Quinn, M. Ed.

Here are the class descriptions:

Math-U-See Pre-Algebra

·        Time: Wednesday 10:10-11:30

·        Date: September 7 – May 3 (No class Nov. 23, Dec. 21, Dec. 28, April 12)

·        Cost: $515 (Due at registration)

Have you reached the point where you now depend on a teacher manual to check your student’s math work? Have you had to relearn everything right along with them? Do you shudder at the words “coefficient”, “polynomial” and “algebraic equation”? If you’re spread thin and are looking for a workable solution to your student’s upper level math courses, Math-U-See is a logical choice. Using visual aids and explaining WHY we do what we do in solving math equations is one of the benefits of Demme’s plan for higher mathematics. Each lesson teaches a new concept in manageable portions while revisiting prior lessons to keep the concepts fresh in mind. Practical applications for daily life will be an important area of focus. Along with learning new concepts in each class period, the students will have plenty of time for questions and individual help on new concepts. For questions outside of class, students will be able to access a facebook page where they will receive help on concepts with which they are struggling. One-on-one tutoring will also be available to those that require this service on an as-needed basis at an additional tuition rate. An honors component is also available.

Materials Needed:

·        MUS Pre-Algebra Student Pack 2009 Edition (includes Student Workbook and Tests)

·        Integer Block Kit (133 piece block set)

·        Algebra/Decimal Inserts

·        3-ring binder (2 inch)

·        4 tab dividers

·        Loose-leaf paper Pencils

For more information or to register: Contact Cheri at cdfriesz@gmail.com or 704-560-6728.

Math-U-See Algebra 1

·        Time: Wednesday 11:40-1:00

·        Date: September 7 – May 3 (No class Nov. 23, Dec. 21, Dec. 28, April 12)

·        Cost: $515 (Due at registration)

She has homeschooled her own four children, which included the Math-U- See curriculum, for the past 18 years. Cheri has a love for math that she realizes not everyone shares, but hopes to instill in her students.

Animation 1 will provide a broad overview of the basic principles of animation while creating amazing 3D projects. Students will learn the basics of modeling, lighting, materials, key frame animation, rigging, cameras, and rendering.

Technology Requirements: Computers and software provided

Instructor: Ms. Julie Quinn, M. Ed.

The last sixteen years of my life have been spent teaching computer animation and digital art. It is my passion to show students how to create something they could previously only imagine. I have worked in public education and provided classes on Saturdays to students from 8 – 14 who were interested in exploring the digital world of animation.

My Master of Arts degree is from Michigan State in Curriculum & Teaching. I am also a certified teacher in North Carolina. It is a joy to be able to provide these courses in an environment where individualized learning is celebrated.

The 2016-2017 Charlotte Scottish Country Dance Society classes with Jack Pressley begin on September 8!!

The 2016-2017 Charlotte Scottish Country Dance Society classes with Jack Pressley begin on September 8!!
Looking for a P.E. course for the next school year? Look no further! Scottish Country Dance is vigorous physical exercise, challenge for the mind, a great opportunity to get to know others & it's steeped in cultural education.
Scottish Country Dance (SCD) was the forerunner of American square dancing; its music the forerunner of American bluegrass. SCD is danced with pairs of folks in sets of 6 to 10 people. It really is great fun!!! Younger and older can participate (ages 8 and up).
Over the past few years, eight of the CSCDS young people have received scholarships for their dancing abilities to attend the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's summer school in St. Andrews, Scotland. In addition, there are three students from our 2015-2016 classes who earned scholarships and are going to Scotland this August! Here is a video of one of their dances:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvrSB7-eJr0
What is great about this program is that it’s P.E. for the whole family, and a participant can actually demonstrate aptitude through their scholarship program which looks great on transcripts.
No experience necessary.
Location: Fellowship Hall of Gilwood Presbyterian Church (2993 Odell School Rd, Concord, NC)
Time: Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Dates: September 8 through June 1.
Dues to join CSCDS are $60 (2016-2017) per person for the entire year. Returning member dues are $50 for the entire year.
Boys do not have to wear a kilt to classes. Girls are to wear skirts below the knee. Ballet shoes or socks must be worn. (Shoes run $15-$20.)
To register or for more information please contact David Carter at d.carter73@windstream.net or send a message to The Homeschool Gossip to be forwarded!
