Fall Harvest Homeschool Day at Historic Latta Plantation ~ Huntersville

Fall Harvest Homeschool Day

Thursday, September 28 at 9 AM - 2 PM

Enjoy a hands-on day dedicated to home school students learning about harvest season and everything that comes with it. Harvest season wasn't only about picking crops and stocking the smokehouse. It was also the time to make soap out of fresh lard, candles from bees wax, prep for long winters of firestarting, press fresh apples for ciders, and save herbs for winter dishes.

Learn about, and even try your hand at, these 19th century fall harvesting responsibilities. As always, the plantation home will be open with docents sharing history. The farm and barns will also be open for children to visit with the friendly Latta farm animals including the ever popular sheep and lambs.

The event runs from 10am-2pm with ongoing activities. Can’t get here right at 10? That’s fine, we will welcome folks into the event offering plenty of things to see and do as activities are ongoing throughout the event. Pack a picnic and enjoy at one of our shaded picnic tables. The Merchants Wagon Gift Shop offers a variety of candies, snacks, drinks, colonial games, toys, and books to brows while visiting.

Admission:
$6.00 per-person ages 4 and up
Members in for FREE
Tickets purchesed at the door, no reservations required, groups welcome
Historic Latta Plantation strives to be an affordable and fun educational attraction for families to enjoy. As a non-profit all proceeds go to the programs, farm animals, and upkeep of the circa 1800 historic site.

website  ~  facebook page  ~  facebook group

The Scottish Country Dance group will be meeting at Gilwood Presbyterian Church (2993 Odell School Rd, Concord, NC) on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  The classes are for ages 8 and up. Occasionally, classes are divided by age for height reasons.  Class dues are $70 per new dancer for the year ($60 for returning dancers) with the first two classes free.  Checks can be made out to CSCDS.  Classes will run from September 7 through June 7, with no class during Holy Week (Thursday, March 29).  There is an advanced class that meets on the same day from 2-3:30 p.m.  This class is based on skill level and is by invitation.

The dress code is as follows:
Gentlemen – Pants or shorts, no jeans or camo.  Shirts with sleeves.  Socks with gel grip or soft soled shoes such as ghillies or ballet shoes (black is the most common color).
Ladies – Shirts with sleeves, skirts to mid-calf, socks with gel grip or soft soled shoes such as ghillies or ballet shoes (black is the most common color).

**It is strongly recommended to purchase dance shoes that are large enough to fit an insole, as we will be dancing on 100% concrete.  Last year we found reasonably found priced insoles at Payless ShoeSource.**

Classes may be canceled on short notice due to the church needing the space for a funeral.  We will do our best to contact you as soon as possible if this occurs.

If you would like more information on our Scottish Country Dance group, check out our website or Facebook page. For those considering classes, you may join our members in our Facebook group!

Program Description DoD STARBASE focuses on elementary students, primarily fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as they continue their education. The academies serve students that are historically under-represented in STEM. Students who live in inner cities or rural locations, those who are socio-economically disadvantaged, low in academic performance or have a disability are in the target group. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them. The program engages students through the inquiry-based curriculum with its "hands-on, mind-on" experiential activities. They study Newton's Laws and Bernoulli's principle; explore nanotechnology, navigation and mapping. They are captivated by engineering as they use the computer to design space stations, all-terrain vehicles, and submersibles. Math is embedded throughout the curriculum and students use metric measurement, estimation, calculation geometry and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate and evaluate concepts. The military volunteers apply abstract principles to real world situations by leading tours and giving lectures on the use of STEM in different settings and careers. Since the academies are located in different branches of the military this experience is highly varied. Students may discuss how chemical fires are extinguished, learn how injured are transported, explore the cockpit of an F-18 or the interior of a submarine. The academies work with school districts to support their standards of learning objectives. A teacher whose class attended DoD STARBASE stated, "STARBASE teaches science and math in ways that we wish we had the time, resources and expertise to do in the regular classroom. It's experiential, exploratory learning with a direct tie to the standards."
